There are accumulations of up to 20 centimetres of snow expected by this evening with heaviest snow loads on roofs occurring in Spruce Grove and Drayton Valley regions of Alberta where they could reach 25cm.

Roof Snow Load Considerations
Removing snow from the roof (especially flat roof snow removal) is a wise thing to do, especially considering the live loads from last winter. Last winter the snow loads exceeded all acceptable live loads for roofs in Central and Northern Alberta and we seen a number of roofs collapse. For more information on acceptable live loads and roof snow and ice removal services visit our main blog and search key words.

Removing Snow and Ice From the Roof
Roof Snow removal can be dangerous and should be done by a professional, however, if you are considering doing it yourself you will want to be sure you are following safety and structural engineering principles in the process. Our main roofing blog has articles that will assist you.

Roof Drainage
Flat Roof systems require that the roof drains be free and clear of ice and debris. When heavy snow loads and the freeze thaw cycle starts there is the danger of roof drains freezing up. When the weather improves and the snow begins to melt, be sure to check the roof drains regularly during the process.

Here's a video from You Tube we found that shows what can occur when roof drains and scuppers are not cleared properly.

Preventative Roof Maintenance
Specifically important with Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Roofing, after you have dealt with the roof snow removal, the ice removal, and you have checked to be sure the drains are clear of ice and debris the next step in the process is to have the roof checked in the early spring. As soon as the roof is clear of snow and ice you should be sure that a qualified roofing contractor checks all the seams of the roof membrane, the flashing, and drains. For a preventative roof maintenance checklist visit our main web site under roof maintenance.

Environment Canada Has Issued a Snow Advisory

Earlier today, Environment Canada issues a snow advisory call for 10 - 15 cm of snow in the Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta area.

We have some concern with this considering last year live snow loads on roof systems and the collapses that took place. At issue most specifically is larger industrial and commercial flat roof systems in the Edmonton and Red Deer areas. Live loads on roof systems are an important consideration when there is upwards 10-15 cm of snow about to load on flat roofs around the city given the over-loads last season.

Our main roofing blog has an article covering the considerations of roof snow loads and snow removal and when it should be done and why. The blog also has a number of other detailed articles about rooftop snow, snow loads, roof drainage, attic ventilation, condensation, emergency roof repair, and the general maintenance of your roof in times like these.

If you need any advise or roof snow removal or ice dam removal services call us at +1.780.424.7663 or email us at edmonton@grscanadainc.com.

Our 24 Hour Emergency Roof Repair Hotline is +1.877.497.3528.

Best of luck with the snow on your roof! Be sure to clear the roof and keep a close eye toward the roof drainage! Clean out the roof drains as the snow begins to melt.

4:48pm Feb 21, 2012. Roof Report from the Flat Roof Maintenance Crew, Edmonton Alberta

Today we were asked for an article submission about roof repair and maintenance from a roof maintenance crew perspective being the spring is right around the corner.

Today we were fighting weather in Roofing in Edmonton and it looks like we'll be fighting again tomorrow. Tomorrow we're on a Torch On "Rolled Roof" Commercial Roof Repair job for one of the local unions.

As far as a list of items we look for when doing maintenance and repair check-ups on flat roofing, the following would be our "Top 10 List" of things to watch for with regular maintenance on a flat roof (Commercial, Residential, and Industrial all applies).
Flat Roof Maintenance is Important
to Life Cycle of Membrane

About Regular Maintenance and Repairs
Flat roof repair and maintenance is a fair bit more involved than pitched roof systems, primarily in that there are a lot more potential problems with flat roofs and flat roofs really do need regular maintenance. Ideally, we tell customers to have maintenance done in spring and fall. Spring because roof drains can become clogged and the water sitting on a roof is not good. Also fall is important because prior to freeze-up you want to again be sure the drains are clear for freeze thaw cycles.

Remember that excessive water on your roof can cause leaks at seams of single ply roofing such as EPDM, TPO, or PVC and even SBS Modified Torch On can fail at the seams. Tar and Gravel systems are less likely to leak from water pooling, but still the water pooling should be eliminated whenever possible. Tar and gravel roofs that are older that have bitumen rolled paper that is dried out can become a problem.

Quite simply, your main focus is clearing the drains, make sure the scuppers are clear, make sure no leaks have saturated the insulation in the roof, if there is an attic space be sure to check for condensation or moisture, and if you do have any roof leaks be sure to get them fixed before the spring rain season.

TOP TEN Repair and Maintenance Check Ups on a Flat Roof;

1. Sealants, Caulking, Pitch Pan Fillers

2. Drainage, Eliminating Ponding, Internal Roof Drains, and Scuppers

3. Check Parapet Walls

4. Check Sheet Metal and Flashing at Parapets, Around Units, and at Skylights and Roof Windows

5. Building Structure Exterior, Interior, Roof Connections and Tie-Ins, Expansion Joints

6. Rooftop Units, Air Conditioning Units, Skylights, Deleting Units and Roofing In Deleted Rooftop Units

7. Roof Membrane Splitting, Punctures, Fisures, Blistering, Cracking

8. Water Saturated Insulation, Swelling of Insulation (Spongy Under Foot When Roof Walked On)

9. Roof Ballast Being Even and Covering Roof to Protect From UV

10. General Roof Clean-Up

Edmonton Roofing - Shingle Repair or Replacement

Edmonton Roofing: Shingles
Roof Shingles
Repair or Replacement of Shingles

We Service Edmonton and Area With Comprehensive Roofing Solutions - Roof Repair and Replacement of Roof Shingles.

Contact us: 1.780.424.7663 | edmonton@grscanadainc.com

Q) How does a home-owner tell if the shingles on your Edmonton Roof need to be repaired or replaced?

A) Your roof protects your home and the contents inside your home from the effects of weather (rain, wind, hail, etc).

You should consider your roof as your home’s most important protective covering. The maintenance of your roof shingles should be an important part of your regular maintenance to-do list at home. Depending on the type of shingles on your roof, you should be able to expect shingles to last upwards of 20 years, or even more in some instances. Many shingle manufacturers such as IKO, GAF, Certainteed, Owens Corning, and Malarkey now offer Limited Lifetime Warranty or similar warranty on shingles.

Many factors can negatively impact the life expectancy of the shingles you have on your home. Factors that can lower the life of your shingles are improper installation, insufficient attic ventilation (which causes shingles to over-heat in the summer and ice dams in the winter), adverse weather conditions (hail, rain, wind), tree branches rubbing on shingles, ice dams, etc.

Anyone can perform a basic roof inspection from the ground. Ground view shingle inspections are performed safely from your driveway or backyard with a set of binoculars or a good digital camera that has a high zoom.

When inspecting your shingles, look for signs of cupping or curling of the shingles, excessive granular loss (granules are the tiny beads imbedded on the top of shingles) as evidenced in your gutters or at the bottom of down-spouts, split, cracked or missing shingles or areas with organic growth (i.e. algae, moss, fungus, staining, etc.).

Also, an indoor roof inspection can be performed easily with a ladder and a flashlight from your attic access. Our main website has an attic ventilation inspection guide that you can follow.

When inspecting from inside your attic, look for signs of damaged, split or sagging wood framing. Also look for dark areas that look wet or significant discoloration on the underside of the roof sheathing - basically any evidence of frost or moisture on the underside of the roof deck is important to note.

When excessive humidity builds-up in the attic space due to improper attic ventilation, it is not unusual for mould to grow and this will quickly deteriorate the sheathing. This will also have an adverse effect on the indoor-air quality of your home. Also, the moisture can turn in to what can appear to be a roof leak and can also ruin insulation in your attic when your attic insulation becomes soaked.

You also want to check to be sure attic insulation is not covering your soffits. The soffit area under the eave area of your home is typically the air intake system to your attic. The air travels up the underside of the roof sheathing to the exhaust vents at the peak of your roof and out goes warm air. Be sure the exhaust vents are also working properly. Be sure the vents are not blocked by snow or ice and that you have adequate exhaust venting area. You need about 1 square foot of exhaust venting per 100 - 300 square feet of attic space.

Attic ventilation is extremely important to the health of your entire roofing / attic system and the indoor air quality of your home. Roof shingles will also last longer when there is proper ventilation in your attic.

If you notice any of these deficiencies in your attic space or with your shingles, you should contact us for a more thorough examination of your roofing shingles and attic system. Sometimes the solution may be only a minor roof repair or roof ‘tune-up’ versus replacing the entire roof.

We repair and replace roofing shingles in; Athabasca, Barrhead, Beaumont, Bon Accord, Calmar, Camrose, Cold Lake, Drayton Valley, Edson, Fairview, Fort McMurray, Fort Saskatchewan, Gibbons, Grande Prairie, High Prairie, Hinton, Innisfree, Jasper, Lac La Biche, Lamont, Leduc, Lloydminster, Mayerthorpe, Millet, Morinville, Panoka, Peace River, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Slave Lake, Smoky Lake, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Thorhild, Thorsby, Tofield, Two Hills, Valley View, Vegreville, Vermilion, Wainwright, Westlock, Wetaskiwin, Whitecourt and points between.
